If you've ever wondered what goes into prepping a construction site for sheet piling, in this update walks you through the messy reality of it all.


It's been a busy couple of weeks on site, and things are really starting to take shape. We've moved a few things around, made some safety upgrades, and—most excitingly—the sheet piling is well underway. Let's break down exactly what's been happening.

Keeping the Site Safe and Organized

First things first: we needed to make sure the site was safe and clearly marked for everyone. We've been in full signage mode (yes it might seem like overkill, but you need to discharge your obligation/duty to operate a safe workplace).

We installed some new signs to make delivery points clear. We're also keeping the main gate temporarily locked during the day while workers are inside. This stops any unexpected visitors—or deliveries—from walking in and creating a potential hazard with site going ons.

We've also re-jigged a few other areas to make life easier:

  • Created a bigger walkway: We rearranged the layout near the shade area to create more space. It's doubling as our designated lunch spot now, which is a nice win.
  • Modified the site entry: We've set up a temporary access point to make getting in and out smoother.
  • Bought a heap of safety gear: Think cones (I'm a big fan of these for quick barricades), new signage for the fire extinguisher and fire blanket, and even a couple of smoke alarms. Good old Bunnings specials, but they do the job.
  • Installed temperature and humidity gauges: These were leftovers from a prior job, but they're handy to have around.

Oh, and we've also added more fans to keep the electronics cool. One runs all the time, the other is on a timer—a cheap $10 timer, but it works a treat. Sometimes the simple solutions are the best.


Sheet Piling Progress

Now, onto the big stuff. Sheet piling is progressing, and there's a lot more to it than just pushing steel into the ground.

The most difficult side of this job? The side with the column capitals. These protrusions make it tough for the piling rig because the head on the rig is huge—about a meter wide.

They've got to get that head as close as possible to the wall to drive the sheets in, so navigating around these obstacles requires serious precision.

The Installation Process: Step-by-Step

The actual installation process is pretty straightforward once everything's set up.

  1. Platform Prep: First, we had to prep the platform and get it certified for 250 kPa bearing. This involved geotechnical testing and nuclear density testing—fun times, but essential.
  2. Pre-Drilling: The rig then comes in to pre-drill the first section. This brings up a heap of soil, creating a path for the sheets.
  3. Pushing the Sheets: Next, the piling rig locates the pre-drilled hole and pushes the sheets down. At this stage, we're pushing, not vibrating, which gets most of the sheet in.
  4. Vibrating to Level: Finally, they come along with a smaller vibe head attached to an excavator. This finishes the job, zapping the sheet down to the exact level.

In the sections that are already complete, you can see they've brought the sheets down to level and backfilled with the soil from the pre-drilling.

We also had to get the sheet piles ready before installation. That meant cutting in the little holes about 800mm down from the top of sheet—these are for the safety chains on the piling rig.

If a sheet was to slip from the rig's jaws those chains catch it, stopping it from going anywhere it shouldn't.


Site Plant & Equipment

We've got a 40-ton piling rig on site, with roughly 7 tons of head force. That's a lot of power. They also use a 30-ton excavator and a cherry picker for maintenance on the drill rig.

To keep an eye on things, we've set up a couple of vibration monitors. These measure movement across x, y, and z axes, helping us track any potential impact on surrounding structures. The alerts are calibrated at 3.5 millimeters, and so far, we haven't gotten anywhere near the 15-20 millimeters per second limit for structural damage.

A Few More Key Points

We also had the structural engineer come in for a revetment wall inspection—a requirement of our DA conditions. It cost $2,750 for them to tell us what we already knew (that the wall hadn't moved), but that's just how it goes when you need an RPEQ sign-off.

And we're not forgetting about the tree. We got the arborist report back this morning, so we're doing some remedial work on the tree roots. We've cut the roots back with sharp shears, as per the report, and now we'll start fertilizing and protecting them.


What's Next?

The sheet piling guys have an RDO today, but they'll be back at it tomorrow, hammering through this section. The only potential hiccup might be around the palm tree, where the fronds are too low for the rig to get under. We'll likely have to use the excavator to vibe those sheets down.

And what about the sewer? We've had it identified and camera-checked, and we're working within the 1.8-meter zone, which means we've got a detailed plan from the structural engineer to make sure we don't mess with council pipes.
