🤔 What If We Told You the Solution to Australia’s Housing Crisis Is… More People?

Sounds counter intuitive, right? With the average home price now soaring past $1 million and a staggering shortfall of 262,000 homes looming over the next five years, you’d think the last thing Australia needs is more demand.

Yet, India’s Commerce Minister has announced 'deep negotiations' to build 1 million homes in Australia—a $500 billion proposal that could involve importing a massive workforce.

Wait, what?

Let’s think about this. On one hand, we’re facing a housing crisis so severe that households are spending 50% of their income on mortgages and renters are shelling out 33% just to keep a roof overhead. On the other, we’re reportedly turning to migration—the very thing often blamed for straining housing supply—to solve the problem. It’s like trying to put out a fire with a flamethrower!

And what about the materials? Does this mean using new suppliers? If so, will there be a fast-tracking process to ensure these new building materials are properly certified (CodeMarked - https://codemark.abcb.gov.au/) to meet Australian safety and performance standards?

What if this isn’t just about housing? If we dig a little deeper, you’ll may find hints of a broader geopolitical pivot. India and the UAE (both BRICS allies) are poised to fund and deliver these projects, embedding foreign capital and influence into Australia’s housing system. Just the solution for a resource-dependent macro economy where the PRRT has utterly failed to capture a fair share of resource profits for this country.

Nationalise Minerals, Fix Housing ✅
Australia is short almost 400 000 homes and counting. Meanwhile, WA’s mines alone will tip $11 billion into state coffers this year—and far more into private hands. If we taxed resources like Norway, we could fund 40 000 new dwellings annually and end housing supply issues within ten years.

Meanwhile, local builders struggle with labour shortages, sky-high costs, and planning "red tape". So, why not train and employ Australians first? The government is trying—with incentives for apprenticeships and plans to boost construction workforce participation. But is it enough to get the job done in any meaningful way?

And let’s not forget the irony: while foreign buyers are banned from purchasing existing homes, we might soon have foreign workers building new ones—potentially living in “special camps” (because where else would they go in a rental crisis?) while locals grapple with insecure tenancies and generational inequality. It doesn't make sense in my opinion.

So, are we gas lighting ourselves into believing migration is the hero here? Or is this a desperate Hail Mary from a government that’s run out of ideas?

Could they actually be looking to leverage three problems with one solution? That is, increase housing supply, boost their taxpayer base, and attract further foreign investment (Build To Rent) so we can sell off our real estate in the same way we've sold our natural resources?

Either way, one thing’s clear: the housing crisis is decades in the making, and there are no easy fixes. But maybe, just maybe, we should start by asking why we’re not investing in homegrown talent & manufacturing first—and why we’re so quick to outsource our future and potentially our land revenue.

It's worth remembering this could just be an unsubstantiated rumour too.
What do you think? Is this a masterstroke or a misstep?

To be clear, I'm not against new ideas—but they must be well thought out, rigorously planned, and developed in close consultation with key stakeholders like local governments and community groups who are already on the front lines of this housing shortfall.

The federal government simply cannot make these decisions in isolation, as the effects ripple directly into the lives of everyone already living in Australian communities.

But every decision has consequences, and right now, people are just tired and running out of hope
